Proclamation Day Celebrations!

Today Tuesday 15th March 2016 was known as Proclamation Day and it was a very special day for everyone at Scoil Mhuire NS. A huge crowd from all corners of the Schull locality turned up to celebrate, commemorate and reflect upon the events of 1916 through a range of activities. Styles and outfits from the early 1900’s were on display as everyone immersed themselves in this unique and historic experience. We began the day by raising our National Flag at 9.30am with the help of our youngest student Chloe Fuller (Junior Infants) and our local TD Michael Collins. The flag raising was then followed by a very competent reading of the Proclamation by Paddy O’Driscoll and Paddy O’Regan. We then completed the outdoor ceremony with our pupils playing our National Anthem (Amhráin na bhFiann) on tin whistle accompanied by Ms. Jones, Ms. Roycroft and Mr. Duggan.

We then moved into Fr. Hurley Hall where we had more music, song, dance and other activities. Séan South, The Dawning of the Day, The Foggy Dew which was expertly sung by Hannah O’Donovan Lannin and Oró Sé do Bheatha Bhaile were some of the songs that were played and sung. Samantha Ross in 4th class expertly danced a reel and a hornpipe and was a big hit with all present. Steven O’Reilly eloquently narrated ‘The Mother’; a poem written by Padraig Pearse. Fifth and sixth classes rewrote a comprehensive and brilliant version of their own Proclamation entitled ‘A Proclamation for a new Generation’ and this was read out by representatives from all classes. We then finished the day with some Céilí dancing under the tutelage of Sr. Gabriel! After that people enjoyed refreshments while browsing through and researching school roll books from Lowertown and the boys and girls schools in Schull dating all the way back to 1916 which were in display in Fr. Hurley Hall.

Open Invitation to celebrate Proclamation Day with us

As you are probably well aware by now, Tuesday 15th March 2016 will be known as Proclamation Day in schools throughout Ireland. Scoil Mhuire NS will be marking this day by commemorating and reflecting upon the events of 1916 through a range of activities. We will begin the day by raising our National Flag at 9.30am and we’d very much like parents and the local community of Schull to be present for the ceremony and the activities that follow. The flag raising will be followed by a reading of the Proclamation and the playing of our National Anthem by our students. We will then move into Fr. Hurley Hall where we will have more music, song, dance and other activities.
So that we can really immerse ourselves in this historic experience, we remind you again that we encourage children and even yourselves the parents to dress up in homemade costumes similar to what people would have worn 100 years ago. We don’t expect you to go to any expense and many of the clothing items can probably be found at home or perhaps in local charity shops. For some help and ideas on what you might wear, take a look at the following links…

Canadian Woman seeks help tracing her Schull roots

Julian Carthy (McCarthy?) Born 1810. Photo taken in Cornwall in 1883

Having recently stumbled upon a 4th and 5th class post on our website, uploaded by Mr. O’Callaghan last year and entitled  ‘Schools Long Ago’ http://schullns.com/?s=school+long+ago , Canadian woman Jane Moody was prompted to get in touch with us. “I was completely thrilled to find your project online because I am trying to find out as much as I can about my great, great grandparent’s who lived in Schull or Ballydehob in the early 1800s” Jane told us. “They survived the famine to move to Cornwall for 30 years before moving to the Canadian prairie province of Manitoba where they thrived.”

Jane was even able to provide a photograph of her great great great grandmother. “My great great grandmother Ellen Neill (or Base- which is confusing; she is recorded with both last names). Her mother was Julian Carthy (McCarthy?) and she was born in 1810. Here is a photo of her taken in 1883 in Cornwall – our only record apart from her baptism, marriage and children’s baptismal records.”

Can anyone shed some light on this intriguing story? The email in full from Jane is printed below…

Hello from Nova Scotia, Canada!

I was completely thrilled to find your project online because I am trying to find out as much as I can about my great, great grandparent’s who lived in Schull or Ballydehob in the early 1800s. They survived the famine to move to Cornwall for 30 years before moving to the Canadian prairie province of Manitoba where they thrived.

I am wondering whether there were hedge schools in or around Schull in 1810 – 1850.
I have no idea how they lived or even survived for that matter. No family stories were passed down.

Anything you could tell me about this would be wonderful. Thank you so much! My gratitude in advance for taking the time.

Sincerely,
Jane Moody
