Sport and Recreation

2014 Sciath na Scol FinalistsScoil Mhuire NS provides opportunities for its pupils in a wide variety of sporting & recreational activities in both competitive and non-competitive environments.

The promotion of our national games has a proud tradition in our school. As part of the PE curriculum children from Junior Infants to 6th Class receive coaching throughout the year in gaelic football on a fortnightly basis. This is kindly organised by the local Gabriel Rangers GAA Club. A schools league in both hurling and football (kindly sponsored by Brosnan’s Centra) is also run during lunchtime each year culminating in exciting Winter & Summer finals. On a competitive level, boys and girls participate in the West Cork Sciath Na Scol football competition every year and also take part in the INTO Mini 7’s competition.

Scoil Mhuire NS also takes part in the FAI National SPAR 5’s each year. This is a 5-a-side soccer competition which is open to boys and girls from 4th, 5th and 6th class, and puts emphasis on fun and inclusivity. The blitz day format is co-ordinated at local level with the assistance of a network of FAI Development Officers and local primary school teachers. These personnel co-ordinate events at County level with qualifying schools progressing to Regional, Provincial and National Finals.

From 1999 to present, pupils at Scoil Mhuire have competed with distinction in athletics at the Cork Primary School Sports which are held annually at CIT Sports Ground in Cork.

As part of the Aquatics strand in PE, children from 1st class through to 6th class each receive six week blocks of swimming lessons at Schull Leisure Centre. By the time the children reach their final year at Scoil Mhuire NS, they are generally very competent swimmers.

Children also receive regular music lessons from a very accomplished music teacher, Martina French. Martina visits the school every Wednesday for two terms and teaches children from 1st to 6th class how to read music and play the tin whistle. These lessons are kindly subsidized by our Parent’s Association.

LD Golf’s rising star school’s programme takes place over 5 weeks each year at Scoil Mhuire NS. It gives every child in our school a fun experience of the game of golf, using modified equipment, games and activities, suitable to both indoor and outdoor use in a fun, safe manner.

We also have, in the recent past provided opportunities to our children to experience Speech and Drama as well as Dance, both taught by adept teachers and we hope to provide similar classes in the not so distant future again.

As well as all of the above, children are also afforded opportunities to play soccer, rounders and basketball during their outdoor P.E lessons while dance, badminton, bowling, chess, table-tennis and co-operative games are also available indoors in our spacious Fr. Hurley Hall.
