Spar FAI 5s Soccer Competition

Well done to the three teams from Scoil Mhuire NS who did us proud in the national Spar FAI 5 a side soccer competition on Tuesday and Wednesday. The venue was Clonakilty and it was the first time the competition was held at a West Cork location. Our girls team led the way on Tuesday playing 5 games in total; winning four of them, their only loss being by a solitary goal! Our two boys teams played today and both enjoyed great success winning a number of games which culminated in one of our teams narrowly losing in the final. Well done to every player who represented the school so well and we look forward to taking part again next year. A big thanks also to Bunratty United members, Dan McSweeney and Martina McSweeney for helping out with the event.

Thank you Gabriel Rangers!

Over the past 6 months or so Gabriel Rangers GAA Club have provided the inhabitants of Schull, Ballydehob and many places beyond with immense entertainment. While collecting West Cork and County titles culminating with a Munster Final appearance last Sunday in Mallow, they thrilled supporters with their expansive football, cohesive teamwork and never say die attitudes. Unfortunately it was at that North Cork venue that the fairytale came to an end as for the very first time in Championship football this year, their opposition proved a hurdle too high. Glenbeigh Glencar from Kerry were hot favourites not just for that game but to go all the way to All-Ireland glory so there’s certainly no shame in this defeat. This Gabriels team have now set the standard for all teams coming after them in terms of commitment, belief, teamwork and skillset and we can look forward to supporting them as they ply their trade next year at intermediate level for the very first time in their history!

Whilst the team were busy collecting silverware, 3rd and 4th class did projects on the history of the club. They began after they captured the West Cork title in September. The children cut out newspaper articles and photos and also included a little of the history of the club. The children were delighted to see some of the team browsing through the projects when the brought back the county cup in October! They were even more thrilled that there were so many Monday nights when they got homework off because Gabriels had won yet another match!

A new chapter has now been written in the club’s history and we enjoyed being part of it. Gabriels Abú!

Up-Coming Events at Scoil Mhuire NS

Thursday 8th December 10.30am Mass in Schull Church. Children will walk from the school to the church and return to the school immediately afterwards.

Saturday 10th December The Scoil Mhuire NS Parents’ Association Tree of Light (Christmas Wish Tree) will be lit on Saturday 10th of December at 6pm outside the Bunratty Inn. A raffle ticket will be given to each child present at the event and one lucky child whose ticket will randomly be picked out will be awarded the honour of turning on the lights on the tree. A very special visitor along with his entourage is expected to visit during the event and there will be hot chocolate and treats for the children afterwards. All are welcome to come along to join in the festivities!

The concept of the Christmas Wish Tree is to remember a loved one who is not here, be they no longer with us, abroad or elsewhere for any reason. A light will shine on the Christmas wish tree at the top of the village throughout the Christmas season. Your intentions will be remembered at mass and service on Christmas Day. A gift card comes free with the light which costs €5. A list of those for whom the lights are dedicated to, will be posted on the tree. All proceeds go to Scoil Mhuire National School Parents’ Association and will be used for the benefit of the children. Cards are now on sale in various outlets throughout the village.

Paddy O’Driscoll wears the red of Cork!

During the past summer, Paddy O’Driscoll, a former pupil of Scoil Mhuire NS had the distinct and prestegious honour of being chosen to play on the Cork Primary School Football Team! This was a fantastic achievement as after several trials Paddy was among an elite group of 22 players picked from among thousands of other pupils in schools throughout Cork city and county.

Many athletes in the past who made their inter-county debut in the Primary Game have gone onto greater things. Cork footballer Brian Hurley, Kerry footballers Anthony Maher and David Moran, Championship soccer player Conor Hourihane, Premier League and Irish soccer player David Meyler and Munster and Ireland scrum half Conor Murray are all graduates of the Primary game in their respective counties. Paddy was chosen on the team to play at half time of the Munster Football Final but unfortunately through no fault of his or his team mates, the Cork Senior footballers failed to overcome Tipperary in the semi Final, meaning the Cork Primary team missed out on their chance to showcase their skills in front of tens of thousands of people.

We’re very proud of Paddy here at Scoil Mhuire NS. Now in 1st year at Schull Community College, whilst here he was a great student and role model for younger children and we’re sure that with continued dedication and hard work this is only the beginning of Paddy’s athletic career in the green and white of Gabriel Rangers and in the red of Cork!
