We look forward to working with them during the year ahead and we’re sure the children will be looking forward to meeting them on Wednesday the 28th August also. Gold Medal Winners at Muintir na Tíre School Gardens Competition

Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in maintaining our beautiful school garden throughout the last school year! Cork County Council recently acknowledged the beauty, the effort and the high standards involved by awarding Scoil Mhuire NS the Gold Medal at their annual Muintir na Tíre Schools Garden Competition! This is the fifth consecutive year that we have won a prize and it’s testament to the efforts of so many people but in particular Mrs. O’Sullivan, all the teachers and staff, the pupils and the parents who help out during our regular Meitheals and also those who are currently helping to maintain it through these summer months. As the saying goes ‘Gardening requires lots of water; most of it in the form of perspiration’ and certainly without all your help, it wouldn’t be possible!

The funds raised at our annual Garden Fete in June help with any costs incurred in maintaining and progressing our Garden. This year the children through their innovative stalls and marketing entrepreneurship, a whopping €840.50 was raised and a lot of fun was had as can be seen from some of the following photos!

Upcoming Events at Scoil Mhuire NS

As we approach the final few weeks of the school year, the following are some upcoming events which may be of interest to you…

Garden Fete – Friday June 7th. This event will begin at 1.00pm when we will kick off proceedings by raising our Health Promoting Flag and Junior Entrepreneur Flag. This will then immediately be followed by our annual Garden Fete where our 6th class pupils will set up station at their stalls either selling products or providing fun games. We will also be hosting the HB Ice Cream Funday fundraiser on this day which will raise funds for Down Syndrome Ireland. Your child will receive more details during the week. We hope to see you there!

Mr. Cronin’s Retirement Celebration – Tuesday June 18th. After 17 years of service and dedication to the education of pupils at Scoil Mhuire NS, Mr. Cronin will retire at the end of this current school year. We will be hosting a celebratory event in recognition of his contribution to our school and the community of Schull. More details will be disclosed closer to the time but we expect the event to begin at 11.00am. Anyone and everyone in the community of Schull is invited and in particular current parents of pupils at the school as well as past pupils and past parents.

Sixth Class Graduation – Wednesday evening 19th June.

Summer Holidays – School closes for the Summer Holidays on Friday 21st June at 12.00pm.

Coming Home; Art and the Great Hunger

Coming Home: Art and the Great Hunger is a major cultural, educational and tourist event worthy of local, national and international interest and as you all probably know at this stage, we are lucky enough that it is currently being hosted in Uilinn; West Cork Arts Centre in Skibbereen. It is an exhibition of artwork from Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University, Connecticut, USA (IGHM), which has the largest collection of Ireland’s Great Hunger-related art in the world.
A visit to the exhibition is a highly sought after experience with schools from all over Cork visiting on a daily basis. Luckily for Scoil Mhuire NS, 5th and 6th class are being given the opportunity to visit Uilinn this Tuesday 25th of September. A bus will be provided which will transport the children to and from Skibbereen and the cost of hiring the bus is kindly being sponsored by our generous Parents’ Association. We have also arranged a visit to Skibbereen Heritage Centre for both classes on the same day which will suitably compliment their visit to the Arts Centre. Here the children will take part in the renowned and brilliant ‘Famine story Exhibition’, therefore completing for them a fantastically unique educational, historical and cultural experience.

A short (15 mins) but excellent movie has been created as a companion to the Coming Home Exhibition and it’s the first time ever on screen that the Famine story has been told through the eyes of children. Sit back and enjoy…
