Fifth Class

5th & 6th Class School Tour

On Wednesday 8th June, we went on our School Tour to Titanic Experience and Cuskinny Court in Cobh. When we arrived at Titanic Experience, we were given our boarding cards for the Titanic which had the name of one of the passengers who boarded the Titanic at Queenstown (Cobh). Our tour-guide took us on a virtual journey to board the tenders and join Titanic for her maiden voyage to New York. Along the journey we viewed the original pier also known as Heartbreak Pier, which was the last point of land contact for the Queenstown passengers, we learned about life aboard Titanic and about the conditions on board for third and first class passengers. We experienced the chill of the sinking, through a unique cinematographic experience. We also explored the exhibition area. And before we finished we learned the fate of our passengers. We all survived. We finished our tour with a stop off at the gift shop.

Following our visit to Titanic Experience, our next stop was Cuskinny Court. At Cuskinny we had a great day of activities from Grass Sledging to Smugglers Quests and best of all the mucky obstacle courses where we took part in a military style obstacle course where we ended up wet and covered in mud. To finish our day, we gathered around the campfire for a sing song and some toasted marshmallows. Everybody thought that it was the best school tour ever.

A Big Thank you to Jean, Lynda and Sheila for joining us on the day. It was amazing fun and all slept very well that night, to say the least.

Here are some photos from the Day.

Confirmation:

On 20th May, the pupils from Fifth and Sixth Class celebrated their Confirmation. They prepared conscientiously for this occasion and great credit is due to them. Both the children and their families enjoyed the day.

Something Fishy Stream Visit

Fifth and Sixth classes went to the Schull stream on Tuesday May 31st with Michael Mc Partland and David from Inland Fisheries to see some fish as part of the Something Fishy school’s programme.  The stream is in Schull is running behind the houses on Air Hill and enters the sea at the pier.

We looked at baby brown trout and salmon and also some eels. Young salmon are called fry. Michael said there were a lot of baby brown trout in the stream but very few salmon fry in the stream as the water is flowing too fast into the sea at the pier and the salmon cannot swim up stream as a result.. There was a big eel in one bucket.  It was really fun. We learned lots about fish. After looking at the fish in buckets we let them go. Then we were given buckets with water bugs in them to identify if the stream was polluted and it wasn’t .

Micheal Mc Partland then showed us how he caught the fish and then we put them back into the stream. We were asked some questions and then we got bands, rulers and magazines. It was a great fun an we had a fabulous afternoon.

Our Lighthouses

As part of our Science class on electricity, we decided to design and make lighthouses, using what we had learnt about electric circuits. Using card, coloured cellophane, paper, paper plates, batteries, wires, bulbs and holders, we made some really cool lighthouses.

Dreams & Nightmares

Fifth & Sixth class read extracts from Roald Dahl’s ‘The BFG’ based on Dreams. The BFG is the story of a little girl Sophie and the unusual, tall, new friend she meets one night when she is meant to be asleep in bed. We wrote our own dreams and nightmares, using the BFG as inspiration, and we created Dream Jars of some of our favourite Golden Phizzwizards (Dreams) and Trogglehumpers (Nightmares). We all had a lot of fun making our Dream Jars and are very proud of the end results.
